My Fashion-Obsessed BFF Combed Through My Summer Wardrobe—Here's What's Out

Published

on

Working as a fashion editor requires complete submersion into the industry: from bubbling brands to emerging trends, you quite literally have to be in the know at any given moment. But when it comes to our own closets and personal tastes, it’s still possible to come out a bit clueless. It’s simple to like a trend from afar, but applying it to yourself is a wholly different matter: I’ve loved the low-rise baggy denim look for a minute, but have stubbornly clung to my tight high-waisted kick flares too much to completely take the plunge.  To get a little third-party advice, I rang up one of my good friends to see which items in my closet I should finally let go of to give way for something new. With over 40k followers on Instagram and a feed full of visually stunning outfit shots, Nana Agyemang is one of the few people I know who is just about as equally fashion-crazed as I. After giving her a tour of my closet, she broke down the pieces I should consider adding to create some spice to my daily wardrobe and those that I should place on the backburner. Keep reading below to see all of her suggestions—you probably want to make note of them too.

Nana immediately noticed my forever expanding collection of midi skirts and dresses. It’s a practical length, but she advised me to lay off buying them for a bit in favor of maxi skirts. “They’re saucy in a demure way,” she adds.

I’m no stranger to a silk scarf (I have a handful of them to protect my hair against rough pillowcases at night) but never really took them seriously as a style statement. After incorporating this printed one into her looks during a recent trip to Palm Springs, Nana convinced me to give them a go and to put my bucket hats on ice for now.

“They’re everywhere,” Nana tells me about Jordan 1s. If social media is any indication, I’m inclined to agree. From Londoners to Parisians and New Yorkers, it seems to be the latest sneaker silhouette to be embraced by the fashion set. They’ve been on my wishlist for a minute, but I may just have to finally push the trigger now.

I’ve already been well steeped in the concept of name jewelry, but my friend noticed that my signet rings aren’t as interesting as the more eye-catching styles of personalized jewelry. My Canal St. name ring has been a part of my jewelry collection for almost two decades now, so I guess it will once more get new life in the coming months.

On the subject of denim, Nana informs me that the baggier the better. I’ve taken notice of their dominance both among fashion people online and designers, but have been slow to adopt them for myself. “They look really amazing with a tight top,” she adds. While she still loves a good mom jean, she agrees that more loose-fitting options feel more cutting-edge for the moment.

There’s a time and place for a flat shoe, but as my BFF explains lace-up sandals can be just as comfortable with a bigger statement. According to her, I should invest in a pair of strappy heeled sandals pronto, and looking at her pictures wearing them I’m completely on board.

Who What Wear Podcast: Natalie Imbruglia

Let’s talk about writer’s block. So I’ve had writer’s block in terms of working on a book or working on an article. That’s one version of it. What is it like for you? What is writer’s block like as an artist? And then how do you get through it?

I think initially, I didn’t even admit to myself that that’s what was happening. I’d had a really traumatic experience of spending five years working on a project. It was when all the record companies were folding, and I kept getting inherited by new people, and everyone kept trying to change me, and the album changed three different times. Then finally, I signed to Island Records, and I had three Coldplay co-writes on this album, and then they shelved it. They dropped me. I think it was released in Australia and New Zealand only. I was like, you know, the universe is telling me something. I’m not supposed to be doing this. So I quit. I had a bit of a breakdown. I went to Australia. I was a judge on The X Factor for a year, I went to America and studied acting, and I really thought that I was done with music. Really, I really did. Even down to when I got signed to another record deal, the covers album, which I was made to do because I wanted to do original material. But looking back, I don’t think I would have been able to write an original-materials album at that point. I think I was still very much dealing with insecurity and fear.

There was a funny experience I had with a guy called Ronnie Heart, who came down from Scotland to write with me. I couldn’t sing a note. I kept kind of saying, “Should we go for coffee?” It was the most traumatizing experience. I didn’t try again for a long time after that, because it was so terrifying. It was touring the Male album that I reconnected with my fans. As much as I love singing other people’s music, it dawned on me that my fans really want to hear what I’ve got to say, and there’s nothing like singing your own truth, singing your own story. So I just thought, I owe it to myself and to my fans to get over it. Baby steps. I just said to my management, “I want you to book me, at least 10 days straight, songwriting sessions a day.” I had to be brave because there were going to be songs that I don’t like, and there were tears and everything. The song “When You Love Too Much” was the first. I wrote other amazing songs in Nashville. But this one, it was about the conversation, the heart opening I’d had with a collaborator. The fact that we encapsulated heartbreak we’d both been through in this song in a particular tone—most of my songs are about love, but there are so many different ways to talk about love—the fact that we just nailed it, it’s almost like therapy for me as well because you’re like, I got that one out. So that was a turning point.

While the weather may not have been the chilly, autumnal time of our dreams, fashion folk did not miss out on an opportunity to pull out their leather, fuzzy accessories, and thigh-high boots. Self-Care Tips for Moms | Who What Wear

Whenever I scroll through social media, I often wonder how people manage to do it all. How are they able to make their lives appear so effortless, even with a million things on their plates? Sometimes I’m in awe. Some days I feel jealous. And I occasionally compare myself to them (which just makes me feel like I’m not doing enough). So it’s refreshing when someone I admire hits me with some honesty. Take Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, the founder of self-care brand and modern-day spa Chillhouse, for example. “I get a lot of help. It takes an army,” she tells me. Despite the help, I’m still impressed by how much she does on her own. Not only does she have a business to run, but she’s a new mom to a ridiculously cute little boy, Heni. So I decided to dig deeper and find out how the founder of Chillhouse actually chills out.

“Self-care is survival. Rather than getting to that point of burnout, it’s better to get into a lifestyle where self-care is a part of your routine,” explains Ramirez-Fulton. “Whether it’s going to yoga or indulging in skincare, you need to take that moment for yourself daily so that you can show up for others in a positive way.” What’s her latest obsession? Treating herself to everyone’s favorite French skincare brand, Clarins. “I’m big into facial massages, and Clarins has such elevated products. After application, I see an instant shift,” she tells me. What else does she do to power through the day? Keep scrolling for a peek into a typical day in the life of one woman who’s juggling it all.
