An Interview With Guitar Virtuoso/Rock Star Rocky Kramer – Essentially Pop

Published

on

Hailing from the Scandinavian Peninsula country of Norway, Rocky Kramer is truly a modern day Viking, poised to take no prisoners as he conquers the hearts, minds and souls of rockers around the world! Armed with a guitar, this graduate of Metal 101 constitutes a triple threat as a composer, vocalist and formidable musician.

I sat down with Rocky Kramer for a Q&A about his new single “Alcohol” and his stellar career…..

What was the inspiration for your new release Alcohol?

I wrote “Alcohol” when I was sixteen. I wanted the song to start with a calm guitar, then go into an instrumental part with a growing intensity. The second half of the song, which is also the single edit, makes you want to tap along with your foot, as it features powerful horns and vocals with a fun guitar-keyboard duel in between verses. The song structure is mimicking the effect of alcohol in a way, which isn’t what the song is about at all. I wrote the lyrics in a way that it can be interpreted in multiple ways, even though I had something specifically in mind. Alcohol can be good and bad, so there are several things in life it can help describe, depending on your experience.

Do you have any new projects on the horizon?

I’m working hard on the music for my next studio album these days. I wrote these songs as a teenager, but I’ve learned a lot over the years, so I’m making sure that I use all that knowledge to improve the songs as much as possible. I’m essentially stripping them down to their skeletons and building them back up again. I’m very excited about it! I’m also involved with another project that’s in the early stages, but will be very exciting to talk about, once we make it official!

Your first music video for ‘Rock Star’ debuted with more than a million views on Facebook, and more than a half million on YouTube. Are there any similarities between the ‘Rock Star’ and ‘Alcohol’ videos?

Unfortunately, no. We produced the ‘Rock Star’ music video well before the pandemic shut down the music industry as we knew it. The ‘Rock Star’ music video was big production, with animation, shot in multiple locations with full film crews. We simply couldn’t conceive of such a production during the pandemic. The ‘Alcohol’ music video is therefore a “quarantine style video” shot entirely following “stay-at-home” rules. We had huge plans for that video and it’s sad that we couldn’t carry those plans out, but everyone’s health is far more important than a music video. On the other hand, I do believe the video documents the challenges of our times and perhaps makes Alcohol’s message more poignant.

In your opinion, how has your music benefited society?

It would be difficult for my humble mind to say that my music has benefited society, but I hope that what I do provides a form of entertainment or relief that makes a difference in the lives of my fans. I can say that the fans have changed me. I really enjoy interacting with them and finding out what part of my message touches them. Until the pandemic spawned my weekly Twitch show, I didn’t realize I was resonating in countries like Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Guatemala. I’m only getting started so maybe one day, one of my songs will change the world!

Can you please talk about your Tuesday night show?

Sure! On Tuesdays, I turn my camera on, grab my guitar and rock out for 2 hours straight on Twitch. The show is called “Rock & Roll Tuesdays with Rocky Kramer” and begins at 7 PM Pacific. It’s a fun way for me to entertain fellow rockers and metal heads, while we can’t go to actual shows. Because it’s live, I get to interact with people from all over the world through the Twitch chat. It’s been the perfect way to deal with being stuck at home all this time. The show has developed a loyal following that reaches nearly every continent, both live and through the VOD replays.

Now that the world is reopening, will you be touring?

I can’t wait to start touring now that the world is beginning to open back up again. I was supposed to play a number of the Strawberry Festival dates in China during the dreaded 2020, but of course they all had to be cancelled. We’re discussing rescheduling those appearances along with some European and U.S. dates, for this year. I definitely want to play Latin America, where rock and metal seems to be a way of life! It’s too early to say anything specifically, but the dates will be announced on social media and my website as soon as they’re confirmed, so stay tuned!

Many people have learned a lot about themselves during these crazy times, is that true for you and if so, what have you learned?

I’ve learned a lot. Or at least, it has changed my perspective in a few ways. The thought that the whole world could essentially shut down was a concept no one would have believed a couple of years ago. It shows how fast your life can change, or even worse, how fast millions of lives can be at risk. I believe it’s made me less selfish and concerned about myself. I now try to look at the world as a whole and figure out what’s best for our planet, rather than just what’s best for me, which is easy to do when you’re young and full of dreams. I still can’t wait for things to go back to pre-pandemic conditions, but at this point, maybe it will feel privileged just to reclaim our old lives again. I guess we’ll find out soon!

Silk Sonic has finally released its second single, and it was worth the wait. The duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak have delivered another dose of ’70s nostalgia with “Skate,” the perfect follow-up to their chart-topping “Leave The Door Open.”

After releasing their first single, Silk Sonic performed on several awards shows and specials and were nominated for three BET awards. They’ve even teased a full album, An Evening with Silk Sonic could be coming at any moment.

Until that album drops, though, we’ll have to take what we can get and “Skate” delivers. A funky and smooth tune, you’ll have it on repeat on your Spotify all day long. Check out the new track below and, as always, make sure to let us know what you think!

Neil Nathan – ‘You’re My Lady’  – Essentially Pop

Published

Throughout his career, Neil Nathan has been compared to great artists on the regular. And they’re a diverse bunch too: Dusted says he reminds them of Cat Stevens; Skope likens him to the big three: Beatles, Dylan, and Cohen. Surviving The Golden Age goes further and says his music is imbued with the spirit of Roger Waters, and Bruce Springsteen; while Blogs N Roses invokes two ends of the spectrum in The Kinks, and Neil Young. Even more diverse is Powerpopaholic’s comparison of Nathan’s soulful, high energy songwriting to that of Matthew Sweet, and Jeff Tweedy; while No Ripcord pulls no punches in pronouncing Neil Nathan to be “the bastard stepchild of Jackson Browne and David Bowie”.

That’s some mighty big boots to be stepping into.

But listen to Nathan’s songs, and you’ll instantly know why he elicits such comparisons. He has a classic style about him in every aspect – from his songwriting, deep understanding of the storytelling art, his powerful lyrics, his pleasant and versatile voice, his guitar, with its warm tones, and his talent for timing.

His latest single, ‘You’re My Lady’, a joyous celebration of love and togetherness, feels readymade for easygoing radio; there’s a familiarity about it, it could easily be a 70s FM radio classic high rotation track. It’s a pop-rock standard right from the outset.

The lyrics to ‘You’re My Lady’ tell the story of a man who travels through dangerous terrain, just to get to the woman he loves. His lady. The video takes the frank, forthright, and homespun lyrics one step further, and we see Nathan dressed in a spacesuit, wandering through the desert. Soon enough, he’s performing, helmet and reflective clothing still on, in front of computer animated graphics, strumming his acoustic guitar, while otherworldly landscapes flash by behind him. In one glorious scene we see the earth rise before him, as he roams across a barren moon.

Wolf Rd – ‘As Good As It Gets’ – Essentially Pop

Published

Chicago quartet Wolf Rd have been hometown heroes right from the start of their career, and when they celebrated the launch of their 2019 debut EP, ‘Nowhere Around You’, the show was sold out.

Wolf Rd are still releasing singles from the EP, complete with music videos, along with high energy performances in the Chicago area, which have seen them share the stage with national touring acts, and ensuring their position as one of the Windy City’s most loved local bands.

Made up from Chris Hoffmann (vocals), Nick Hoffmann (drums/additional instrumentation), Geoffrey Duckmann (guitar), and Devin Stone (bass), Wolf Rd blend the signature anthemic melodies and passion of pop-punk instrumentation more familiar to fans of metal; suffice to say they’ve created a sound that is both unique and genre-inclusive. They’ve drawn comparisons with All Time Low, and State Champs, for their harmonic vocals, while their energy sees them likened to Neck Deep, and their raw emotion calls to mind that of their Chicago compadres, Knuckle Puck, and Real Friends. Wolf Rd’s cathartic songs are ideal to get those feelings out, no matter where you’re screaming the lyrics – whether that be the basement of a local club, or through your speakers or headphones at home.

‘As Good As It Gets’, from their new EP, ‘Counterpoint’, shows fans a more mellow, delicate side of the band. Produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Roye Robley, the track features acoustic guitars, and sweet harmonies, as well as a guest vocal from Sylvia Mendez. Explaining that break-up songs don’t have to be nasty or violent in order to share the pain, Chris Hoffmann says,

“One thing that was really important to me was that I didn’t want this song to be one-sided. I’m far from perfect, and when things fall apart, both sides usually share some of the blame.”

The video for ‘As Good As It Gets’ starts with the aftermath of a birthday party. A “Happy Birthday Bartley,” banner proclaims its intent, along with torn streamers and empty beer bottles, casually strewn around a backyard. The scenes of the clip perform as a metaphor for the rollercoaster relationship outlined in the song; we see both sides, from the sweet, intimate moments to the heated arguments and the dramatic end. But the memories – just like the remnants of a party, are still there to haunt you.
