Ariana Grande, Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles Encourage Fans to Vote in Primaries

Tuesday (June 23) marks the final primary of the month and Alicia Keys wants you to get out there and vote.

The singer tweeted “I’m ready!!!” on Monday in order to remind her fans in New York, Virginia and Kentucky that they should remember to exercise their rights by participating in the crucial primaries that could determine the shape of November’s congressional race.

Sara Bareilles reposted a widely circulated image that spotlights why the vote in Kentucky is especially important, in light of what CNN predicted could be a “chaotic” vote due to severely limited in-person polling locations as a result of concerns over the coronavirus.

While there are normally 3,700 polling stations in the state, only 170 will be available on Tuesday, and only one in the commonwealth’s two most populous counties, one of which, Jefferson County, is home to the state’s largest Black community.

“This is SYSTEMIC RACISM and OPPRESSION,” NBA superstar LeBron James tweeted this weekend about the lack of voting locations in traditionally minority-heavy areas that many Democrats have painted as attempted voter suppression.

Bareilles’ post notes that half of Black Kentuckians live in Jefferson County, which has 600,000 registered voters. Kentucky’s vote is also notable because it finds two Democrats, favorite Amy McGrath and Black state Rep. Charles Booker battling for the chance to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November.
