Patti LaBelle delivered a powerful rendition of “Over the Rainbow” during PBS’ A Capitol Fourth special on Saturday (July 4).
Standing next to the Liberty Bell at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, the 76-year-old “Godmother of Soul” gave an awe-inspiring performance of the Wizard of the Oz classic ballad, originally performed in the film by Judy Garland.
“God bless America,” LaBelle proudly proclaimed after the performance.
“Over the Rainbow” has been a staple for Labelle over the years, and was featured as the closing track on her 1981 album, The Spirit’s In It.
Hosted by John Stamos and Vanessa Williams, the virtual 90-minute event featured other performances from John Fogerty, Renée Fleming, The Temptations, Trace Adkins, Andy Grammer, Yolanda Adams and more.
