*What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine-a relationship colloquial that may have once sounded romantically charming and endearing, but now, in the middle of an ever-changing pandemic, may feel more like nuisance for some couples. Togetherness. Of course, no one quite expected that meant being around your partner day in and day out for months on end.
We’re just shy of five months into quarantine in the United States, with a Pandemic and Race Revolution simultaneously competing for our attention and awareness. It’s a wonder any of us have focused on work, let alone directing our attention to our relationships.
Nonetheless, it’s important for successful ones. Being intentional.
“Here’s this time, God has allowed it, I’m quarantined with you, so how do we rediscover each other,” said Meagan Good, actress, social justice advocate and co-author of the book, “The Wait” with her husband Devon Franklin. She says the two of them have recently been trying to be more intentional about their marriage while quarantined.
“To be able to talk about these [relationship] things [with each other] and get deep and really be just crazy, crazy transparent. We’re already fully ourselves, but I think there’s parts that we’re still discovering and learning about ourselves,” Good said.
She’ll be discussing marriage, relationships and love during the lockdown on the Black Love: How We Can Support Each Other Better panel at the first annual LA Homecoming Virtual Summit and Celebration of HBCU’s History and Culture, a special partnership between Motown Records and the non-profit black youth mentoring organization, Whole and Seen.
“LA Homecoming was created out of a desire to give back to my community during these challenging times.” says Whole & Seen Founder and LA Homecoming creator, Melissa Eno Effa.
Being very transparent and honest, Good shared how quarantine has been an adjustment for she and Devon, who have now been married for 8 years.
“The truth is, I travel a lot, he travels a lot. She said, “I don’t know when we’re going to get a straight 5 months again where it’s just us…I choose to cherish this time, even when he’s getting on my nerves.”
Their antidote-couples counseling or therapy. Thinking of it as more preventive care, like exercising so you lower your risk for diabetes, but for their relationship. Both of them wanting to be proactive, instead of reactive.
“We were like listen, there’s not anything wrong, but why be reactive. Let’s be proactive. Let’s just look under the hood and just see what we can find and it’s been really really incredible because there’s some stuff that we didn’t even know was in there.”
Black Love and Relationships is just one of many topics The LA Homecoming Virtual Summit will tackle. Aside from celebrating all things black history and culture, other Black Hollywood stars like Amanda Seales, Will Catlett, and Ashley Blaine Featherson and more will join panel lead discussions on things like Success, Failure and Mental Health. It’s a time to go deep, yet also embrace and celebrate Black joy.
“There has to be a healthy balance and not just for ourselves, but we also have to project a healthy balance for other people who are struggle in the same way.”
The event also serves as a fundraiser to help students in South LA with distance learning supplies during the Pandemic.
“I’m happy to be involved. At the end of the day, it comes down to purpose. And has really come down to why has God put you here,” she said.
Good, who has been outspoken on the recent Racial Revolution, protesting in Los Angeles and posting on social media, leaped at the opportunity to be apart of this positive community event. She says using her voice and platform as an agent for change has been, in her mind, a no brainer.
“I’m always looking for an opportunity to see what else can I do.” She said. “You have to determine what side of the line you’re going to stand on, because you have to chose now, there is no in between. And if you are in between, you’ve chosen the side of the oppressor, because it’s been made very clear.”
The LA Homecoming Virtual Summit will take place Friday July 31, 2020 and Saturday August 1, 2020 at 5pm PST on the Motown Records YouTube channel.
