Spider Rockets, who make their base in Hazlet, NJ, are a great example of this attitude, and their new single, ‘Rip Your Heart Out’ will have you investigating what else this band has on offer.
While Spider Rockets are every bit as independent as they can possibly be, they’ve built for themselves a dedicated national following, who love its unique sound, which combines two-fisted blues rock, classic Turnpike metal, alternative music, noisy punk – as well as a smattering of pop, too. Their latest album, ‘Along Came A Spider’, is their fifth, and it could be said it’s their most self-assured, not to mention most raucous, as well. Frontwoman, Helena Cos has a voice that is well able to hold its own against the sonic assault of Spider Rockets; for ‘Rip Your Heart Out’, she’s given it even more welly, thanks to producer Dan Malsch, whose name you might be familiar with for his work with Tantric and Doro.
‘Rip Your Heart Out’ is a cautionary tale about love gone wrong, and it’s been paired with an anime video, brought to life by director Roman Fernandez.
Much of the drama takes place at a seaside amusement park, where, cleverly, the thrill rides stand in for the ups and downs of a tumultuous relationship. Sure, if you’re not from New Jersey you’ll still get the concept, but it certainly helps if you are.

All three are deeply inciteful songs, as Hank explains,
“The singles are more or less about relationships. Even though the lyrics focus on specific situations, they can reference any number of events I’ve experienced throughout my life. That’s part of the beauty of songwriting as far as I’m concerned. You can write a song describing one particular set of circumstances, but oftentimes they find connections to similar emotions and events that transpire later on. Eventually, over time, the songs find a common thread.”
‘Why Go’, a stirring track, sets its focus on an argument between two fictional people, who are nonetheless committed to the relationship. Hank!’s vocals are raw and slightly discordant in a pleasing way – think a cross between Morrissey and Bob Dylan; intellectual music. The instrumentals further enhance the Morrissey vibe, jangly guitars and energetic drums.
Speaking of ‘Why Go’, Hank! says,
“At the time, I tended to dismiss it as pure fiction, because I really didn’t know what I was talking about,” he muses. “It was pure fiction. Now, however, I’m finding some meaning that I had not necessarily intended to unearth before. I’m particularly keen on the off-kilter drum fills.”
Hank!’s music takes a few listens to really appreciate the deeper components, but it’s nonetheless appealing even just the first time through. The tapering off at the end of ‘Why Go’ was a surprising and very pleasant adjunct to the rest of the track – the ear follows along as if following a car as it drives into the distance.
Coldplay won’t keep making music forever, and if you believe what they told NME in a recent interview, that finale could be coming sooner rather than later:
“We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too. I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’.”
Fear not Coldplay faithful! Those words don’t mean the band will be breaking up. Lead singer Chris Martin is referring specifically to studio albums, leaving the door open for more touring, collaborations, and producing.
In the same interview, Martin revealed that Coldplay has been trying and failing to write a Bond theme song for the past 20 years.
